MUSIC FROM SENEGAL
Originally from Senegal’s hustling bustling capital city Dakar, Nuru Kane has now made a name for himself in the world music scene. Starting his musical carrier by making his first guitar out of fishing wire, the young Nuru started to experiment with new sounds which eventually made him into the musician he is today.
He is one act where it is hard to put him into a genre. He is part-Moroccan, part-Senegalese, part-blues, part-whatever else he fancies throwing into the mix which often means some interesting soundscapes.
His new album Exile is a perfect demonstration of his diversity to genre shift with some of his songs including some off time reggae rhythms. Songs such as Issoire perfectly demonstrate this experimentation, which mixes this reggae heat with more traditional ‘gnawa’, style of playing. ‘Gnawa’ is the Moroccan trance-like spiritual music.
